questo sporco mondo meraviglioso is one of the numerous collaborations between the director luigi scattini and piero umiliani, and one of the most interesting and varied soundtracks within the composers repertoire. a work full of influences and musical quotes, with guests and valuable collaborators such as edda dell’orso and i cantori moderni di alessandro alessandroni. some of the songs presented in this album are among his best works.

floating astronomical objects and the void in between – jon hester enters the dystopian circle with four gravity manipulating techno tracks coming directly through the wormhole. jon hester got his start in the midwest us, living in chicago, minneapolis, and connecting with detroit. after years on the dance floor he took to the decks, going on to work in a record shop, host his own events, and hold residencies that developed his sound. music production and a move to berlin followed, but dancing and mixing are still the inspirations that drive him to create. his dj sets are built on physical rhythms and adventurous programming, effortlessly combining diverse varieties of techno and house. with an engaging presence and a knack for telling a story, he builds a unique connection with each audience, and works any room until it sweats.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

saft welcomes nortasun to it s expanding roster of artists. with not too much info being available about the artist, the music should do the talking. nortasun comes up with a sample drenched ep that consists out of swell basslines, mind expanding chords and outlandish percussion works. untitled 1 opens up with a carefully placed disco sample that hovers over the rhythms very nicely. the percussion section and the ascending chords serve the overal ambiance while nortasun plays with the extended loop pattern that maintains of interest. untitled 2 serves as a very deep but functional voyage into tribal territory. a vary of percussion sets in and smartly exchanges tones with fx cuts. on the b side fudge fingas debuts on saft with an atmospheric beast of a remix for untitled 1 that constantly grows and cleverly uses vocal cuts that change up the original atmosphere and makes the overall a very broad work of house music. the stevie wonder like clava hit + piano solo s that come in when the remix progresses are all in courtesy of the edinburghian producer himself.

yalta is a resort city on the southern coast of the crimean peninsula surrounded by the black sea. this place has heavily influenced a talented artist pavel milyakov also known as buttechno. this album is his dedication to yalta, but it’s not just about geographical location, it’s about a special and sacred state of mind and soul that the producer calls -yalta-. this very personal work of a mature author reflects his deep and multifaceted approach to the research of the sound language.

physical therapy makes his debut on spencer parker s work them records with a medley of club focused techno cuts. growing up in new jersey, physical therapy later moved to chicago, then new york, before finally settling in berlin where he s quickly built a profile as a stand out dj/producer. baktadust comes in the form of two tracks: the fast tempo main mix that combines peppy piano riffs and metallic effects, as well as a slower fried mix featuring cleaner chords and a sultry bassline. push me then demonstrates robust percussion, a rumbling low-end and eerie tremolo atmospherics before shadowy echoes and off kilter kicks conclude the release in spasm.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

for the second bad barbie records vinyl release of 2016 we are more than exited to bring you the magnificent work from the bla bla music owner daniel sanchez with his impromptu ep. here we have four amazing pieces where each one tells a different history. the first one pearled into droplets saw the light after a great live jam and the result is combination of several layers of base elements with subtle minimalistic articulations. these, in combination of the bass and synths lines do create a truly amazing micro house piece. the second one vague, is an atmospheric dub were a single synth chord raises in slowly, followed by a very subtle kick and bass line to set a bit of rhythm to the whole thing, creating a superb dreamy vibe while the chords do their thing with delicate reverbs and delays in the backend. a great musical piece indeed. for the third track we have yi, again another amazing micro house jewel born from a live jam, but this one is even more energetic than the first one and it also includes, besides a rocking bass line, analog synth chords that lifts up the mood during specific moments, which also do their part articulating themselves perfectly with some occasional twisted vocals that helps create an amazing party vibe from beginning to end. and if this wasn t enough we also have bedroom stories vocal tool that daniel included with his delivery, which can help spice up a dj set with ease.

the delivered sampling of featured artists on louie vega starring, is one for the record books and a must for any music aficionado as louie explains, this body of work is a masterpiece that will be party of my legacy. i see it up there on the same high shelf with albums like nuyorican soul, elements of life, and masters at work.

monoton ‘monotonprodukt 02’, also known as mp02, is the debut album of austrian electronic maverick konrad becker. out in 1980 it was a precursor of the minimal techno dub sound that was starting to be popular more than 15 years after. the album has been reissued by desire a couple of years ago and a new pressing is in the work. anyway it’s time to launch a remix ep with new (and not so new) producers giving crédit to the work of the austrian master. on the a side we find 3 new artists paying their dues : sergie rezza, whose debut album out on desire was critically acclaimed, abdulla rashim (abdulla rashim records / northern electronics / semantica) and also opal tapes’ boss stephen bishop own basic house. the b-side is a great megamix of the album tracks by the one and only ambient/electronica veteran scanner !

originally released in a limited edition of 500 copies in 1982 monoton’s second album ‘monotonprodukt 07’ is now a collector item and also one of the most important album of all-time. it has been voted one of the 100 best records by highly influential uk magazine the wire. monoton was founded in 1979 by hypermedia wizard konrad becker as an art project that underwent various transformations and collaborations in its exploration of psycho-active sound. a pioneer in experimental electronic music, becker continued to break new ground in electronic media. monotonprodukt 07 has been reissued on vinyl by desire (and is still available as a double picture-discs limited to 500 copies. it’s the first time ever that tracks from the album are remixed and desire is proud to had such great artists/producers as us prositutes, svengalighost with fellow partner and l.i.e.s. boss and hospital productions artist ron morelli. the last remix is the work of great mancunian duo rainer veil (modern love). an incredible remix package that do justice to this classic album ! mastered by matt colton at alchemy.

strut present an inspired new afro-electronic project for 2016, kondi band, a collaboration between sierra leonean kondi (thumb piano) player sorie kondi and us producer / dj chief boima, who himself has sierra leonean roots. the project was spawned after boima happened upon an online video of one of sories original tracks. sorie kondi is a blind musician with a will to thrive like no person i have met before, explains boima. my work with him began with a youtube link. i spotted the video for his track without money no family and was struck by his beautiful vocals and socially-conscious lyrics. these incredible melodies he was playing on his namesake thumb piano (the kondi) sealed the deal: i immediately decided to remix it.

new york coterie sheik ‘n’ beik line up the next 12” in a string of successful releases including legowelt & xosar under their now defunct xamiga guise, jeffrey scott and label owner rechulski. enlisted for their 7th record is the japan based mister saturday night and 1080p affiliate keita sano. with a strong affinity to analogue sound and old school audio processing, sano renders personal mind-maps in his work - eclectic and off-kilter productions shot-through with warmth and propelled by potent drums. his latest offering for sheik ‘n’ beik is one fans old and new will relish: a series of 4 warped excursions showcasing sano’s refined and idiosyncratic studio techniques. ‘bypass motion’ kicks things off with a fizzing 909 and a loose-limbed bass pattern set churning under brisk, steely atmospheres. dense in the low-end, ‘child’s play’ then follows up with a hard-nosed groove carried by horror-movie sweeps and distant computerised vocals.

this track has been in my computer since a little while when dj sotofett joined me here in amsterdam, to play an epic back to back at the school (amazing new club here). when i am doing a track, it could go to a lot of different directions as im jamming them for hours in my pipe studio. i sometimes could get lost. so i asked sotofett to join me in the studio to help to finish it. then we ended with those 2 versions of cham, which are, as often when i work with the sextags man, the result of live takes almost unedited. we also add some percussions from shadi khries and we recorded two versions of the same track within hours. one being bass driven with a lot of psychedelic noises and the other one more space-techno. our adventures continues, here is another slice of spaced out music.hope you ll enjoy.

keeping with the rough release rate of an album every couple of years, prime numbers label boss trus me is back with his fourth full length, planet 4. featuring nine cuts of intergalactic techno and once again marking a considerable sonic evolution for this acclaimed uk artist. never one to do the same trick twice, david james wolstencroft uses his latest album as a vehicle for his own interest in deep space, physics and dark matter. it is those subjects that have occupied his mind in recent years, and those subjects that inform this brilliantly otherworldly album. where previous lps have variously been funk and soul heavy, or openly analogue and physical, this one is a more subtle and supple techno affair that is as cerebral as it is seductive. starting with a monologue that suggests that man has already landed on mars, 1979 is a cut that immediately places you somewhere in orbit. spooky synths and sci-fi sounds are eerie and atmospheric and very much set a perfect tone. from there, there is slow, elastic and unsettling mood music on the unexplained , deep and insular techno on dark flow and trippy dan bell style minimalism on ring round heart . the second half of the lp touches on chunky dub, manic and melodic grooves. this is a coherent statement that holds together conceptually and musically. as well as providing plenty of dynamite for the more discerning dance floor, planet 4 is also a delightfully detailed affair that will work just as well on headphones late at night.

almost a year after his last outing, london-based vester koza is making a welcome return to the fray with a new ep entitled otr. featuring four atmospheric cuts, for the first time it finds him step away from his own maslo label to join houndstooth. fusing elements of dub, ambient and idm into moody sound worlds with you right at the centre, he has a subtle but seductive touch that has always marked him out. an on-going interest in security, technology and privacy characterizes his work, as does a passion for the vintage and modern gear he uses when producing. all of that is evident here in his most cerebral and conceptual release yet.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.
